The Saleen S281 wing is a very good looking wing. The center LED brake light is the best. But it is a little bit of a pain in the ass.

What is holding it on? There are only 2 bolts that hold this massive wing on. But there is a lot of double-sided tape in there too. There are 4 bolts that hold on the factory wing for the 99-00 cars. The S281 wing uses the 2 holes that are the farthest back. The other 2 are just covered up by the wing’s “arms”. The rest is held on by double-sided tape.

Speedbump’s problems with this wing:
The wing is huge and is all solid urethane. Sort of like a rubbery plastic. It really heavy and it has to be stretched a little to fit the car. It is made of flexible material so its not like it can be molded to fit exactly like a wing made of fiberglass or rigid plastic. The LED doesn’t exactly fit either. Mine sticks out a little on the tow ends. And since it is so heavy, it makes the trunk deck lid rattle going over rough surfaces.

Speedbump’s suggestions.:
  • Make sure that you take the wing to a body shop that knows how to install this wing correctly. I didn’t and I got it back and it was on lop-sided. It is very tricky to get on the car.
  • Make sure that the LED fits right BEFORE the holes are drilled for it. Shaving little bits off certain areas should take care of this.
  • Be very careful backing up. The S281 wing sticks out further than the bumper. So if something is tall enough, it will hurt your $400+ investment before your $150 bumper. Remember that it is solid urethane. It won’t bend back if you hit something. Picture a block of soft clay and hitting it and putting a dent in it. That’s what will happen to your wing.
  • Make sure that you really really really want this thing. I love the way it looks and others think that it is cool. But it is a real pain. If you like the kind of look that comes with the S281 wing but you don’t want the hassle, get the S351 wing.
